Every Airbnb reservation is scored for risk before it’s confirmed. We use predictive analytics and machine learning to instantly evaluate hundreds of signals that help us flag and investigate suspicious activity before it happens.
Watchlist & background checks
While no screening system is perfect, globally we run hosts and guests against regulatory, terrorist, and sanctions watchlists. For hosts and guests in the United States, we also conduct background checks.
We routinely run safety workshops with hosts and leading local experts and provide hosts with online safety cards with important local information for their guests. Hosts can also request a free smoke and carbon monoxide detector for their home.
As long as hosts stay on Airbnb throughout the entire process—from communication, to booking, to payment—they’re protected by our multi-layer defense strategy.

Always know what to expect
Everyone on Airbnb has a profile to help other guests or hosts get to know each other. To book or host, users must provide Airbnb their full name, date of birth, photo, phone number, payment information, and email address.
Our secure messaging tool lets guests and hosts ask questions about a listing or experience ahead of time. After the reservation is booked, they can use it to easily message back-and-forth to coordinate things like check-in and directions.
Guests, hosts, homes, and experiences are all reviewed by our community. Guests and hosts can only review each other after a reservation is complete, so you can be sure feedback is based on actual experiences.
Our global team is standing by 24/7 in 11 different languages. HOA board members can reach us any time, day or night. Airbnb also offers a neighbor hotline specifically for non-hosting residents in the complex who have a concern about an Airbnb guest or host.
